Eczema Flare Ups: Foods to Avoid
So if you’re anything like me and you’re trying to figure out what the heck is causing these flare ups and how to reduce them, then you’re in the right place. After many long hours of research and then confirming them with the doctor last week. I have compiled a few foods that you may want to try reducing your intake on to see if it helps reduce your eczema flare ups. I went to a naturopath last week to get my blood tested so I can figure out what foods may be causing my flare ups. I also had them test for other allergies as my allergies have been pretty bad within the last two years when summertime hits. Now, I also haven’t been doing the best job of not eating any of these things, BUT, I have been making more of a conscious effort to REDUCE the amount of these foods I consume. I feel like you will adjust to these diet changes better if you slowly start eliminating foods and reduce the amounts of each of these you consume on a daily or weekly basis so you can eventually get to a point where you’re comfortable consuming less of these. If you haven’t heard of the Elimination Method (https://itchylittleworld.com/our-eczema-trials-elimination-diet-how-you-can-do-it-too/), I highly suggest you try it out as it might help you understand your body and how different foods and such affect you. Basically, all you do is eliminate all these foods from your diet. After specific amount of time, generally a month of eliminating the foods that generally cause these flair ups, you will then reintroduce these foods one by one, rotating them every week. This is supposed to help you identify which foods trigger your flare ups. Sooo with that said, here are the foods that my naturopath suggested I reduce my consumption on.
Foods to avoid:
#1 Wheat gliadin & dairy
#2 eggs, soy, peanuts, chocolate, potatoes & citrus
Since I eat a predominantly plant based diet, I have already eliminated eggs and dairy, but I am still working on the others. I eat less soy products than when I first started this plant based journey a little over 2 years ago. Since finding out that soy can cause eczema flare ups, I have been trying to find other alternatives for these types of foods. As an asian, tofu, soy sauce and edamame are some staples that I love eating. Since them I have been trying to substitute tofu with trumpet mushrooms or other varieties of mushrooms. I have also started switching to using coconut aminos instead of the normal soy sauce, but it runs out quickly and there are other foods and ingredients I like to eat and use when cooking that contain soy sauce. I’m an still trying to find alternatives for things like black bean paste, hoisin and things like that. I also have been playing around with different gluten free and wheat free recipes for bread, but I have yet to find a good one that I like. So the search continues for those. For potatoes, I have been eating more sweet potatoes instead. I have also been trying other starchy foods like, jicama, sayote, daikon and green papaya for example. They’re pretty good substitutes too! When it comes to citrus, it’s been a little hard because citrus fruits are my favorite to consume. So when it comes to citruses, I haven’t eliminated them. I’ve just tried to reduce the amount I consume on a daily basis, which is better than nothing.
